Hi folks,

Following on from my previous posting regarding a rim failure

http://www.cyclechat.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=17007

I'm now on the hunt for a new wheel. Have started looking for one online but am having huge confuzzlement.

Wheel I am looking to replace is a mavic cxp 10, 622x13, quick release, tires are 700C Gator ultra thingies.

Bike is a single speed Langster...

Is there a front wheel that you'd recommend for regular commuting duties (150+ miles a week on shoddy London roads). The ones I see online are 12-18 spoke lightweights that I fear would fail at the first sight of a bump whilst lugging 90kg of rider.

Also, there doesnt seem too much mention of wheel size on websites, how do the online stores know what size rim you need if they don't specify size, ie, 622x13 vs 622x15, or doesnt that matter?

Hmmm, cars seem much easier to figure out

Cheers!
Daniel.

Is your hub ok? if so, you could just get it re-laced into a mavic open pro rim. I think they are a bit stronger than the cxp range. unless you can bunny hop on a fixed (which I can't) you will need a fairly robust rim.

You won't need to spend anywhere near £150 for a good front wheel. Don't worry too much about the 622x13 measurement. Most 700c wheels will fit tyres in the region of 23 to 28/32 unless you're buying a specific tandem or touring rim and I'm guessing since it's a Langster you're not running monster tyres.

Here's a few in the £50-£60 range to give you an idea. All of them good wheels. Your LBS would probably be able to build something similar spec for similar price.

Mavic CXP22 on Mirage hub £51.75

Mavic Open Sport on 105 hubs £54.45

Mavic Open Pro on Tiagra hub £62.20

Spend a bit more and you'll get better or track specific hubs, but those above are still very good quality.

Actually, if you have £150 to spend have you thought of replacing the rear at the same time? Stock Langster wheels probably aren't up to much and you might save in the long run buying a pair now instead of waiting till the rear goes the same way as the front. Planet X have track wheels that look very good for £100.

Thanks for that guys, muchly appreciated.

Will talk to the LBS about building a rim using the Mavic Open Pros, or failing that, get the 2 wheels form the planet x site.

I did try speaking to the LBS here, but they either wanted to sell me a cheap 50 pound wheel with like 8 spokes or so, or near 400 for a pair, with adapters coz I am running a single speed....

Kinda added to my confuzzlement.

Thanks again.

Hello Daniel - I'm 10- 14kg heavier than you and I have been using Campagnolo Khamsins + Conti Ultra gatorskins 25s for my London commute (270+km per week) and they have been A1 over the rough and tumble roadworks that is London. They are c £88 a pair and come in bling gold as well as black - try Wiggle, Parker-International etc etc..
You could always sell the rear one (to me:biggrin:) as I am an oldie who has gears...unused but hey!
