Guys I love adventure biking and want to buy a nice MTB. Can anyone suggest me a good MTB that is suitable for beginners like me?

Hi friend, just like I too bought an MTB for beginners but now I have moved on to something more professional. I would advise you to consider Schwinn Frontier Expert or Predator Pro.

How much are you thinking of spending?

I've got a Giant Talon 3 which has done 1,000 miles over the past 15 months, and I love it. It's done bursts around the MTB tracks in Swinley Forest, it's spent days underwater riding through a local ford to entertain the kids, it's carried me 65+ miles home on canal paths from the middle of Wiltshire, I've had a lot of good times on that bike.

It's not been perfect, though the issues have been minor irritations rather than problems. The pedals have needed striping and re-packing with grease (probably down to the days spent riding through axle-deep water) and I'm now looking to upgrade the cable disc brakes, but I reckon it's a Billy Bargain. I'd buy another one, no question.

I hadn't ridden in about 20 years before buying this bike, I've done over 2.5k miles in the past 15 months because it re-awakened my love of cycling.

Thanks. But where can I find info about these two bikes?

I'd look to spend at least 300-400, get a hardtail not a full suspension bike, use your local bike shop as you'll need them for future maintanence, look to see if they have any 2010 or even 2009 bikes on sale, don't buy second hand as you won't know what to check for, look to also spend an additional 100 on kit (helmet, gloves, shoes, shorts, etc) and tools (pump, multi-tool, tyre levers, etc).

I researched this a lot for my MTB, went for Specialized Hardrock. I spent an extra £50 for the disc brake version but depending on your usage you could well be fine with the V-brake one for £300 (or less in sales).

Not a great fan of cable disc, never seem as good or hard wearing as a 'v' brake. I would agree that you'll usually get last years or even the year befores model at a good price, and the spec wont be that different.

I bought a GT Aggressor from Halfords last year.

I took it home and built it myself rather than let the Monkeys at Halfords anywhere near it.

Cracking bike for the money, not had any real problems..... although having said that it's currently in the LBS for a brake overhaul - I'm not particularly confident with fettling hydraulics yet
