..i was reading in cycling plus that cyclists suffer from neck pain, never thought anything of it but since i started commuting 4 days a week i do suffer from the odd sore neck, is there anything i can do to prevent me getting this pain?

Stretching and posture. Certainly helped my issues (caused by my accident 3 years ago).

Believe it or not, the 'livestrong' site has some good neck exercises.

Stand up straight and pull your chin in so you feel the muscles across the top of your shoulders stretch (and you get a couple of double chins  ). Count to 10 and release.
Do this 5 times every hour and it will slacken off in no time.

It's usually caused by incorrect position on the bike.

Stretches (as given above) will certainly give a short-term solution  but, longer term, getting your position on the bike correct should take away most of the need for doing remedial stretches.

The stretch exercised were given to me by my local physiotherapy dept as I was sat at a dest with an incorrect seating position. They do work well, but as said, get the bike set up properly

We are discussing this now as all the desk bound people are suffering with RSI

The co needs to invest in some new chairs and desks, and I need a hydrocortizone injection in my elbow now as it is beginning to hurt like buggery all the time when I straighten it

I can't really add anything but do have to say that sitting at my desk causes me more aches and pains than anything else I do.

I used to get it - now I don't. Never did anything to especially address it, I figured it was just my neck muscles getting stronger/more used to the exercise,

I get ot down one side of my neck, and can be really painful, but after getting my Giant Defy it has reduced a lot, so much that i hardly notice it, must be the different geometry compared to my Allez

+1 to this, but add the forward thrust of the chin after.....and repeat

You look like a chicken, so do it in private

I am suffering with neck pain at present, and one of the physios at the hospital put me on to this, and it is working (she told me to "do the chicken" and I fell for it, but it does actually work after you get over the "is she having me on?" feeling)
