Amazing, a national championship, won by a multi champion and no comments, I thought this was the racing section.

I'm afraid that reflects the lack of interest in time trials today, screenman.

David McCann's beating of Boardman's long standing 25 mile record a couple of years ago received a small paragraph in Cycling Weekly. A couple of decades earlier and it would have been front page news and a major talking point for the rest of the season.

No surprise wiggo won. I'm more interested in looking at the results to see where a few of the guys that do the local TT came.

Around our club the amount of people doing time trials is increasing, sure Wiggo won good for him fantastic to see he gives his fans and supporters in the UK a chance to see him race.

good to see wiggins race in england; but come on, no one is gonna be interested when the giro is on, and, if you've got enough interest left the tour of california too. if wiggins really wanted to show support for races in england he'd put in more of an effort in the tour of britain and try to actually win it, or win some kind of stage race, anywhere, at any time. i know it seems harsh but i was one of the people who went to see him in the tour last year on the stage he decided to act like a child afterwards and say he'd give all his followers thier money back, still no sign of a check. sorry, rant over.

Maybe he was not trying to prove anything and is the competition not open to professionals, I think it is.

I have watched every stage of both tours on at the moment, just thought a national championship was worth a mention on what is a cycling forum. Obviously not a time trial friendly forum though, sorry for taking your time up.

Don't throw your teddy into a corner on my behalf, time trialling is what we do, in fact we are travelling down to Devon for the Nat 25 in a few days time. It is a very niche branch of cycling unfortunately, many reasons why that is the case and I could probably ramble on about that for hours.

Yes, the Nationals are open to anyone but [and this is the subject of much debate] it's not exactly a level playing field when professionals are entered. My better half rides against full time professional women, she is no slouch and is usually in the top half of a field including men. The problem is when she is thrashed by a pro she feels terrible and thinks her time is rubbish. I just think it's not really testing yourself going up against part timers, after saying all that the boundaries are getting increasingly blurred with expensive equipment, wind tunnel technology and power meters which only a few can afford.
Hope that clears things up a bit, wish more would write about TT's.

Not getting wound up so no problems. I just see it that in an open competition we would expect to see the best we have on show.

Now the blurred bit, should we have separate events for professionals, semi-pro, single blokes, rich blokes, the list goes on and on.

In the mean time have fun and enjoy pedalling.

It was an open event - end of. I think it's interesting to see pros mixed up with club riders sometimes - puts things into perspective. And sometimes there's a surprise result.

Nicolas Bonnet, about to turn professional with the Roubaix Lille Métropole team, was crowned junior French Time Trial champion the month before the Rhône-Alpes time trial championships last autumn and was favourite to win. He was beaten by 63 year old José Del Castillo

I would have commented except I had my own cycling commitments away from home over the weekend.

This was never going to be one of the better national 10s - it was too far for some to travel (you can't expect more than half the field to have to travel for more than 3.5 hours) and consequently it did not attract a full field. I know quite a few riders who commented on the dangerous conditions (although apparently the TT I rode on Sunday had even higher winds).

It wouldn't be surprising if the national 25 receives a similar amount of coverage - no pros at all and an equally long way to travel for much of the country. I think if Dowsett were riding the story might be slightly different as everybody wants to see another showdown between him and Hutchinson.

The BTTC is the event that everybody cares about, including the UCI. As has been said, this is really just another open event.

As long as I breathe, I attack.
The days of separate events for pros and amateurs have long gone because their is no longer a distinction between the two. Like most sports cycling is fully open.

+1
My 1st sportive on the 22nd and the winning time averaged 24 mph on a route you could easily have used a triple !!, the slowest time being an average of 9 mph.

Good for all his fans to see him race, but denying a podium place to an amateur? Big fish, little pond come to mind. What exactly was he trying to prove, beating up a load of mainly weekend warriors.

Utter nonsense!! (Big fish little pond) nobody ever said that about Chris Boardman when he was winning time trials everywhere at the same time as getting Olympic Golds etc etc. In any case I think you might find that Mike Hutchinson for one would take issue with you over the 'little pond' comment. He's one more National Championships than most have done races and he holds a huge number of course records and comp' records. It just puts into perspective just how good Wiggins is and why on earth shouldn't he be able to come home and show us all!! Good on him for an outstanding performance - 15 seconds shy of the course record on a bitch of a day - well done mate.
