N+1 - what kind to get?

I used to have a Whyte Suffolk road bike that could take huge tyres, had disc brakes, mudguards and a pannier rack. It was used for commutes but I could go anywhere on it.

I now have a GT Traffic 1.0 hybrid with disc brakes, mudguards and will at some point have a pannier rack (when I find one to fit).

I'm about to get a road bike on C2W and was thinking of something similar to the Whyte - road style but freedom to beef it up for commuting etc.

However, I'll be keeping the GT Traffic. Which got me to thinking - should I keep that for commuting and get a sportier road bike, one of the 8kg jobs with 25c tyres that I can clean when it's not even dirty?

Thing is, my commute is 15-20 miles each way (I don't do it regularly but want to do it more) and I thought a road bike would be better for those distances. But I would need to get something that could double as a commuter and then I'd in essence have have two very similar bikes.

This N+1 business is complicated.

Doctor Canucks diagnoses a road bike itch. I therefore prescribe buying a proper road bike, for sure, because whenever this itch presents itself, nothing else seems to cure it.

You're right in a way, if you compromise too much on a road bike you could end up with quite similar bikes which is way less fun I'd suggest. it's great to be able to change things dramatically. You have the GT for a reliable commute, and when the weather is really nice you'll be able to do the commute on a proper road bike with an amazing turn of speed, and I think you'll really enjoy it.

Just my view of course, and I was attacked recently for having two bikes for different things, so it's an approach that's not for everyone.

It will likely be a Cube. Just looking at the Attain SL and the GTC Carbon. The latter is sexier.

I've never had carbon. My only concern is I crash it and wreck the frame. Does that happen?
Can do. Also with alu, steel and ti too
