Hi all,

New to the forum so be kind, getting into cycling in a big way over the last couple of years and determind to be able to be my own mechanic, can service my bike fine now and have a good selection of tools and have remedied a number of issues on my bike but this latest one is beyond me so any help GREATLY appreciated.

I have a kinda squeek from what i'm sure is the back wheel, it happens at around 1 revolution, initially i thought it was an out of true wheel rubbing on the blocks but when i dis-engaged the brake cable and released the blocks it still happens, it's also not associated with pedalling as it happens while free wheeling, is it the bearings?

May be the bearings needing a clean or replacement and regreasing.

The other possibility is that if you have a rubber dust cover on the axle that it has dried out and causing a squeak, A wipe of grease or squirt of oil will cure it.

Thirdly, are you absolutely sure the squeak is coming from the back wheel. Does it do it if you lift the wheel off the ground and spin it.

ah, two excellent suggestions, thanks a lot compo, i do have rubber dust covers too.

i can only reproduce the squeek when i'm on it, it needs the weight, when i put the bike in the workstand the wheels spin silently and by wheelie ability isn't what it used to be so hard to check.

Have you got a spoke protector / pie plate on ?
Wifes bike had a similar squeak, even rode alongside her, leant over, ear cocked trying to figure where the hell it was coming from...smack bang in the hub area.
Took me ages, investigating every moving part until i thought...hmmm, spoke protector rubbing on the spokes maybe.
Took it off...squeak gone.

Ah, another suspect! This is beginning to feel like the plot of a detective novel unfolding... :-)

Thx gbb, i do have a pie plate, i think, i assume you mean a plastic disk betwee the cassette and the spokes on the rear wheel?

I'd post a pic but haven't yet worked out how to.

My way may be long winded, but i use photobucket. Upload your photo to there, then when you click on it in photobucket, it opens an options box with (amongst other options)..'direct link'. Copy whats in the box, then when posting, click the insert photo icon, that opens a box, paste in it, picture is then attached to your post

Tbf I've had the rubber dust seal squeak as compo suggests. Pie plate / spoke protector is the plastic disc between the cassette and spokes.
