Well i doe write very often i prefer to just sit in the back ground and read the brill posts.
However i thought i would write maybe just to he;lp someone who is just starting out mainly for loosing weight.
I bought my bike last year as i was 19s 10lb or there abouts whey to heavy so i decided to get it off,and get reasonably fit in the process.
I mainly cycle around the local canal network where i live as i aye to keen on the roads (had a few close encounters from car drivers coming to close).I started off doing around 10-15 mile, now i can get upto (on a good day to 41-44 mile)although i would like to get past 50 mile but my legs seem to give in around 35 mile then i just slow down till i get home,My speed when i start off goes from anywhere between 12 - 17 mph then when i feel my legs go i finish off around 10-12mph but i aye really bothered as i am 60 now and not trying to kill myself.I have found now that i also enjoy cycling and the icing on the cake is that my weight is down from 19st 10lb to 16st 8lb (only problem now is i need to buy new cloth's as my old un's doe fit anymore)Since i started cycling in August 15 i have now done 2610 miles which probably aye a lot compared to some on this forum but i'm pleased with the results,so looking to buying a new bike soon probably a cyclocross i.e. cannondale CAADX 105.For anyone who wants to loose some weight this cycling lark is brill even better with someone to ride with, but you need to be determined to do it even in the bad weather which woe be far away now
thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Well done, I've done a few thousand miles round the black country canals ,mainly in the old days with old shopping trolleys and dead dogs clogging the cut,I hear its much more pleasant these days.

Congratulations Tony on your achievements to date, it sounds pretty much like what I'm doing myself. Great to hear you are enjoying it so much.

Well done Tony in the same boat here and loving how it makes me feel. I started October 15 and am now doing regular 50 mile rides but then again I am 25 years your junior.

Oh and was it just me that read your post in a broad black Country accent ^_^

Congrats, Tony. As a recent newcomer myself it's always good to read about how well others have done in taking up cycling. I wish I hadn't stopped riding push bikes as a teen and taking to two wheels again is in part about weight/fitness for me, but in all honesty I just forgot how much I enjoy riding a bike

Good for you! And I bet you'll need yet another set of new clothes in the spring if you keep cycling over the winter.

One way you could get your rides longer, is maybe to start off a bit slower? Try to stick nearer the 12 mph than the 17 mph at the beginning of the ride and your legs might last longer.

Thank You All for the great replies,I did not expect so many but very inspiring for me,just a little update to say that i shall be getting a training device for the Winter when i cor get out due to the really bad weather, i am edging for a set of Roller's so i can stick em in the shed, also i cor be bothered about all that faffing about with the other one's that lift the back wheel off the floor. As for my CAADX 105,well i deffo having one i just got to wait for me Lump Sum from me pension to come through fust then its down me local bike shop to get one (I cor wait). Also will start to peddle a bit slower at the beggining of my ride to accommodate me legs lasting longer i have another post regarding a health matter but i will put that in the appropriate section.
thank you.

@blackcountrytone I think we have a few more mild winters to come before we have some really cold ones, so apart from early morning and those few days/weeks were night temps drop below freezing, its not that much different to riding at any other time of year.
