...was looking at getting a spesh tarmac like I have just got, he's pretty much the same height as me at just under 6ft. He's facing the same problem as me when choosing between sizes as 6ft falls right on the boundary between a 56 and 58. I went for the 56 and have advised him to get this, as the 6'3 is an XL an is designed for people up to 6'3 so he could be quite stretched out.

I'm 6'2" and ride a 58 comfortably. a 56 feels really cramped for me. Its very hard to suggest your friend goes for a 56 or a 58, as its mostly down to personal preference.
Its down to toptube length. Most manufacturers will only have short distance between the TT lengths, so a 54 may not be that far from a 56.Its the same old issue. Impossible to advise on line. Probably a 56, but he really needs to ride a 56 for half hour. He'll soon be able to tell if its too big or small.

I reckon you could be a mate and lend him yours for an hour or so to let him see how he gets on with a 56.
