I picked this lovely Kona Major Jake 'cross bike up yesterday. The intention is not to race on it, or even to do proper cyclo-cross events, but instead to use it as a winter road bike with occasional forays onto old railway paths on days I don't mind getting muddy.
It needs a good service, and I have a spare Ultegra rear derailleur for it, but otherwise it's pretty good. The only thing I really can't live with is the triple chainset, which was presented as an "upgrade" but is paired with the wrong shifters and doesn't work properly.
I've always liked the 'lean and hungry' look of 'cross bikes and I'm looking forward to getting stuck in to this one.

Good fun and capable bikes. I like the option of going off road on my way out.

Disaster! 😂 Once again proving the rule that all projects throw unexpected obstacles into your path. Right hand down tube cable adjuster seized into the frame lug and broken off.

EDIT: actually, this is going to be a bit of a pig to shift. If there's one thing I've learned over the years, it's not to rush into a job like this, so beyond a preliminary head-scratching session I've done nothing yet. But there's not really access for a drill bit and nothing to grab with mole grips.

EDIT AGAIN: it should be easy enough to tap the centre hole of the broken adjuster with a left handed M3 tap, then unscrew it with a left hand thread bolt. Or maybe an Easy Out. But if I break a tap in there, it might be game over.

That had happened on a frame that was donated to me and became my singlespeed bike. It wasn't a problem at the time because I didn't need a gear cable!

I eventually decided to turn the bike into a 1x6 though so then it was a bit of a problem; I bodged it! I am using a bar-end friction shifter so I didn't need an adjuster. I just fed the cable through a plastic ferrule whose pointed end fitted into the broken adjuster, and I used a couple of cable ties to stop the gear cable moving about. Not nice, but it works!

That was just one of several issues which meant my bike came to me free of charge. I just poke the cable outer into the hole where the adjuster should be. It mostly works.

Chop it off with a Dremel and just use a down tube cable stop band

Last resort stuff, but yeah. I think I've even got one in the bits box somewhere.
