I'm not normally in this section of CC (for those who don't know me, I am a regular in commute:smile:).

However, now I have my new road bike and with my crazy decision to do the 100 mile Trossachs Ton in June, I decided I needed to get some miles in the legs.

My complete history of cycling since I was about 17 (now 35!) is nearly 4 years commuting 10 miles a day, 1 x Pedal for Scotland ride (55 miles + extra 10), 1 x killer ride from Stirling (Fintry etc) of 50 miles (it was very windy!) and a recent 20 miler (with stops) around Linlithgow. All but the Linlithgow ride was on a beast of a hybrid.

So today I set out on this loop (it was a little longer at 19.7 to get me to and from my house). I should point out that it has more hills on it than bikely claims as the elevation map doesn't work over the Erskine bridge or through the Clyde Tunnel.

On my commute I average about 15 mph, so I though anything approching that would be great. Imagine my surprise when my computer told me I had managed 17.4mph! ;)

Yeah, yeah I know that is probably nothing great over 20 miles with little wind and no great hills. However, I was very pleased for a first attempt.

The ride itself was really enjoyable. In fact I found I was enjoying it more as time went on, and I felt I had more power in my legs as I reached the end.

I think I am realy getting hooked on this road cycling thing!

Oh and a few roadies gave me a wave... I've made it!:smile:

Well done, mags, you're getting there!

I missed the build up; which road bike have you got? And have you got any pictures? I'm sure everyone else has seen it on here, but I'm curious!

We should have quite a team come September - our own pelaton!

Well done magnatom - why not come down to the smoke and try a FNRttC - followed by a return by bike to London? That will be training enough -and you'll be back in Bonnie Scotland afore Sunday! ;)
(Accomodation easily arranged) <warning English spoken>

Dayvo,

My new stead can be found here. It's got some Ultegra on it. All the gear and no idea....

Apertif,

Ah, part of the difficulty is finding time to ride, even around Glasgow. The family takes up a lot of my time at the moment.

Pardon my ignorance but what does FNRttC stand for? Is this this english that you speak of...?;)

Magnetman - look in the informal rides section - "Community"

Dayvo - I know you are struggling to keep up on the looks front but you could easily use one of mine for a Friday Night Ride to the Coast (clue )
As you have spent all Winter on holiday - which some of us would call 'summer' it is hard to know...
Suffice to say you're welcome - just take a look at the rides calendar and see if something can be sorted out. MacBludgeon of this parish is a bit of a wag too - best steered clear of though as he is a converted golfer/rugbyman - an evil combo at the bar! He's definitely coming for a wine tasting with the regular crew if you turn up...

That's a good average, as mine today was 13.4 but as you have seen my bike that's not too bad, roll on next year to i spend my full allowance on cyclescheme on a top road bike, although it will take me that long to pluck up the courage to tell the wife i'm spending a grand on a bike

Aye, your doing well on that bike! (nothing wrong with the bike as such, but it isn't designed for mile crunching)
The move from the hybrid to the road bike has been an eye opener! I really begrudge any journey I need to use the hybrid now!

17.4 is very respectable Maggers, all those commuting miles are paying off and the Erskine bridge is pretty high, so good on you (mutters and curses that Maggers as already exceeded my usual average).

Don't get cocky now. Thinks will slow down once you've got to haul that carcass of yours up a few hills ;)

Oh aye, that reminds me I need to get that cassette with at least a 25t on it!
