Well after having my bike for a week and a mixture of commitments and weather problems I finally got to try out my new bike. Did a half an hour ride over quite hilly ground (downhill on the way there, uphill on the way back) and was almost dead because of it. Did 5.3 miles and averaged 13.3 mph. It may not sound like much, but for my first go and being severely unfit I'm quite pleased with that!

Thats pretty good going, my first ride I did 8.5 miles at 9.3 mph, felt just like you, 2 1/2 months later, and many questions asked of myself like, I am never going to get faster/climb this hill in any thing other than the lowest gear at 4mph, yesterday I did 32 miles (50Km) @ 14.4 mph (23.25 Km/ph) with a 1km climb at the end with the start of the slope @8% or so (it does get easier the further up the hill you go), and I did that last climb with a P.B. on strava.
So again well done and keep at it.

My first ride was on the 23rd of June, and I have done just shy of 1600 miles.
edit just passed 1600 miles

That is good mile and speed. When I first started riding I think I did about 3 miles and the last hill I did almost made me get off the bike and push. ^_^ I have no clue how slow i went because I just now can consistantly do the speed you did. Good job on your first ride and enjoy your new bike.

Yeah there was one hill I was just struggling with, but I wanted to push through it, and I'm glad I did really.

I'll add to the "well done"' brigade, that's a good speed for your first outing. Keep it up fella! Regards, Mark

Thank you guys! I cycled a bit more today (Although was commuting, so wasn't all in one go, and it went alright. It's just getting the strength to go uphill I really need I think, and the stamina for longer distances.

:bravo:Well done Pieface, don't worry about the hills, when you least expect you'll ride them in one go, takes a few times of trying.

Pieface any distance is good, my first day cycling I took on the hill at Farlie Moors in Ayrshire ( I walked a lot of it and limped the rest of the way, thats a tough mofo lol). Keep it up and give yourself breaks. Don't expect to be able to do wheelies up a hill on your first try :B

take it to your Local Bike Shop and get them to adjust the reach of your brakes. i'm still thinking about having mine shorted slightly.

Well, I think the bug is starting to bite me quickly. Yesterday I went out on my bike to the train station and then after that to Chester from the station and then back again (Quite spaced breaks) Did about 8 miles in total. Also today I started work at 7:30am till 18:00pm without any breaks during, and when I got home, instead of crashing out I decided to go for a quick 4 mile bike ride (Where I improved upon my Avg speed to 14.5mph which I was surprised at after a long day standing up all day).

I think this forum may be stuck with me from now on! ^_^

you will be surprised at how your average increase along with distance in a very short time.......lots of short rides to begin with and steadily increasing the distance as you feel ready to do so will see you right! Trust me you will soon be doing twenty milers without even thinking about it.

The distance and time spent on the bike will increase with out you really noticing it. I found it when I stared back at it. I get so immersed in the houses scenery around me and the behavior of motorists. Do not start me on that one. But the stamina dose build and as I say with out your really noticing it
