Just got back from my first night ride.
After reading the thread about night riding i thought to myself that sounds like a plan and i should give it a go...
So i charged my light batteries, put on my Hi Viz jacket and off i rode into the night!
Its true what someone said about it being a whole new experience, i really enjoyed it. The sense of being alone was fantastic (except for the 100 or so rabbits and the 2 cars i saw) I only did 10 miles but it was enough for the first time.
I need to get better lights though, mine are adequate but i could do with better if this is to be a regular thing which i think it is. I work nights and sunday night is my night off, going out for a ride seems much better than trying not to wake everyone else up in the house while i potter about downstairs.
I was looking at the Hope vision 1 front light, is it any good or is there something better for the same sort of cash?

Just wanted to say i had a bloody fantastic time!!

Excellent. I've not done a night ride as such - I've ridden home a couple of miles from a country pub, but never set out on a proper long night ride in the dark. It's on the list, I'll have to get used to it if I'm going to do the LEL.

Glad you had fun!

I'm a firm advocate of Exposure lights but I doubt you'll find anything as good as the Vision 1 for that money.

If you fancy a home-build light, there is a good thread here.

I'm endeavouring to summon up the courage to home-build  rather than splash out on someone else build.

There are a heck of a lot of us on here that have the Hope Vision 1's....they are good, and hunt about as you may get them for less than £70 in a sale

hope vision 1 is a very good light ;) (but you need to get good batteries as stated in the instructions)

i love riding in the dark and finally getting a decent front light just added to the enjoyment.

I've made up my mind, a HOPE VISION 1 it is then, just checked my LBS website and they stock them, so i feel a trip down there before the weekend is on the cards!
I'm going to try and get out for a night ride every sunday night/monday morning. Spoke to a mate of mine and he's off next week and is well up for a night cycle as well

Congratulations on the first night ride! As you've discovered, you need a light that you can SEE with. Most of the cheaper lights are ok only for BEING seen.

The light that I like, is the Busch & Müller Ixon IQ. That is the best self-contained (4 AA cells) light that I've seen. It can also be run with a dynamo. I'm told that the German lights must meet standards. Most countries do not have standards for bicycle lights.

There are probably better lights out there, but, I don't think you'll beat the B&M Ixon IQ for the money.

I did a 20 mile lone XC night ride just after Christmas. A bit spooky in places, especially going through the woods but great fun. I haven't had the opportunity to try it again since.

For seeing light I used 2 x P7 torches attached to the bar - 400 lumens + a penlight sized LED Lenser torch on the Helmet.

I love doing summer night rides on country lanes you see so much wild life, a while back I nearly hit a badger

When i was out on sunday night i had to swerve around a rabbit who was fixated on my front light.
