I'm so proud

It was in front of my wife and three kids lol, they were stood on the drive and I pulled on slowly and unclipped my left foot.

So far so good but it went wrong when I tried to put my right foot down...

I keeled over to the right, so I put my hand out to catch myself on the neighbour's picket fence, only the thing is very old and the end post was rotten at the bottom so down it went with me on top.

Everyone laughed, my OH had hurt her hands earlier in the day so this cheered her up a bit

And now I have scuffed the top of my seat somehow

Welcome to the Bright side young padawan, the bright side being, you now don't own any dignity

My first clip less fall cost me an ixus 75 camera I was carrying on my hip.

Otherwise a lesson well learned. Pride repairs with time I found.

This is the moment i'm dreading, more for the embarrassment factor than any injuries i might suffer,i'm still clinging onto my normal pedals but feeling the lure of clipless getting stronger

There really is nothing to fear, actually. Never mind your pride, people are really helpful when you go over. I was thrashing about on the ground still fixed to both pedals as people offered advice as we all laughed.

They say that it soon becomes second nature, and it does . It comes back to bite you in the bum though every few months, I find. The two seconds between thinking that you are going over and unclipping is a bit of a cardio-vascular event.

To anyone who is put off going clipless by stories like these, then don't. Once you do it, you won't look back...literally. All my bikes have been fitted out in this way for years. Would absolutely hate riding on flats.

And contrary to popular belief not everyone has "at least one fall in the first few weeks of converting to clipless".

In fact the only riders that I personally know that have had such experiences are mountain bikers and that is cos they are doing rough, technical terrain. All the roadies and commuters I know who have gone clipless have had no probs whatever.

So if you are thinking of going clipless then go for it. Of course all these guys who claim to have never fallen could be lying in order to preserve their dignity

I have been using clipless for well over a year now, and I often look back. It helps me to see if there are any cars overtaking me that might otherwise have to brake, swerve, or knock me off.
