My first 100 Mile ride

Cracked it but it was totally unplanned.

Saturday 25th June went out for a social ride for 34 miles. I was going to add another 20 on anyway and did that and felt good at about mile 54 I thought I wonder if I can get to 75. At mile 70 I thought what the hell.

My furthest ride before my 3 year hiatus was about 78 miles but my longest since my return at the beginning of this year was 54.5.

So first 34 ish was with a group and the rest solo. Managed to keep a 16.5mph average until about mile 86 where to be quite frank I popped a bit and then got caught up in one hell of a thunderstorm and limped home but still managed a 16mph average. So I was quite chuffed

You certainly cracked it, nice one. It's lovely when the legs just take over the navigating, isn't it?

Thank you all for your best wishes. Looking back the highlight of the ride aside from watching the mileage click past 100 was being caught in that thunderstorm. I had no rain wear just my shorts and jersey. The rain was absolutely pelting down the roads were soon awash due to the amount of rain we had previously. I had to stop at one point as my contact lens was playing up due to the water trickling in my eyes and I really couldn't have got any wetter had I dived into a lake but there was just something liberating and life affirming cycling along a deserted road next to an open field watching the fork lightning and listening to the thunder.

So you got to ride, walk and swim? That's a triathlon isn't it?

a 100, unlike a 200, can be toughed-out without any 'special' training - the sense of achievement never fades though no matter how many you do

I've been in that position a couple of times. You go out for a leisurely ride and find it a doddle to 75 miles. But then 75 to a 100, you realise why it is a bit of a challenge. But at that stage you are 25 miles away from home with no short cuts to take, so you just battle on.

Well done with your 100 miles. Maybe a year on the half century rides next year would be a good target.
