My Elite turbo trainer

I think my indoor trainer is broken, I was spinning fairly fast and felt sharp bits on the underneath of my thigh, joined by some plastic fumes. Now the turbo trainer sounds weird and the rear bit on the trainer that contains the important part has melted a little and is wonky. I've only used it about 6 times. Granted it was on offer from Halfords but surely they cannot be this fragile??

I have the same trainer and think its a better bit of kit than my Tacx. Take it back .

Do you think it is worth just getting a replacement. I was in a high gear and spinning fast'ish.
Yes get them to replace it under warranty . I only bought the tacx as it was on offer and wanted a trainer i could keep in the van to warm up at timetrials . I think the elite is a sturdy trainer compared to the Tacx .

Ok thanks for the advice, I will pop in tomorrow. Just another question, is there a reason why I shouldn't be in a high gear while using number 5 (highest) resistance? It was only for 2 x 30 second blasts.

I'm not sure as i only really use the turbo setting to adjust resistance . I may click one or two gears but try not too . Thats just how I use MY turbo , no idea if its right or wrong .

How tight was it. Sounds like the elastomer has melted ? Any slipping. I've bought the same one, but I've not been able to get it out of the box as I have a busted spine.

My last turbo was a alloy roller with a basic turbo fan. I'm surprised you could sprint in a high gear on level 5 - this would suggest a fault with the magnets and the over heating of the gel gripper.

I'm going back to Halfords now and see what they say, I don't have a receipt but I have an email for when I reserved it. It was a sprint, but I am fairly new to this so my sprint may not be a sprint :-). I did say it was for 30 seconds but it may have been closer to 20.

Are you using any speed monitoring, Garmin/Computer? I Like to keep my Elite Mag under about 26mph and find that it doesn't get too hot or start to smell. I don't use a turbo specific tyre though so maybe if you do you can go a bit quicker.

No I don't, going by the gear I was in and cadence I would have been going over 35mph. I do use a turbo tire, but it was the unit that melted, the tire was fine. I am going to keep it in a lower now anyway. What I was doing was pointless really.

I'm obviously a serious wimp as a high gear and resistance setting five on my elite equals out of the saddle and about 5 rpm for me

I get it spinning and then knock it up into the number 5 setting. Once up in 5 it's not long before I'm hitting 3 again!

Definitely some kind of a fault. I've used a basic Tacx for 15 years with no problem and changed to an I-Vortex Smart before Christmas. Both have been rock steady and can be wound up for sprints without problem. The latter has negative slope as well ie coming down a virtual hill it actually drives the roller slightly, so coming down off Ventoux the other night we had about 40 minutes at 40-45 mph without problem! Oh, and yes I do use a turbo tyre as it stays a lot cooler and it also doesn't matter if it goes shiny, not something that improves grip on a standard Conti...
