Not really commuting just a leisure ride with a mate of mine.

Weather: on/off drizzle/light rain

Circumstances: Back roads of Northern Essex very little traffic probably passed or passed by six cars in five miles. First three and half was mostly uphill fairly easy though new chain needed bedding in so some changes were clunky if not failing at times (despite it working when tested)
The last mile and a half was mostly downhill/flat, fairly steep at times. I have never done this route this way round so the hazard when I reached it was an unpleasant surprise.

Downhill, picking up speed, long left hander on single lane road. I turned the corner and there is a pink peuguot in the road, slammed on anchors skidded. hit front wing then airborne, landed on helmet then flipped onto right side and rolled (cheers to my dad for making me learn how to fall properly).
Laid on my back, I was fully conscious but my lower right back hurting like buggery. Locals on hand within seconds to look after me, blankets, space blankets and good informed first aid and a motorcyclist who took charge as knew the dangers.

Ambulance arrives quickly. They strapped me up like a turkey at christmas on a back board and neck brace. Cops take ages to arrive and copper doesn't know his phonetic alphabet as I spell my name. I am told I skidded on oil on road (oil and drizzle do not mix)

Car needs new front wing. Driver unhurt by all accounts. When I see my helmet I thank god I was wearing it. I am sure it saved me from serious brain injury if not the morgue.

Am I injured, some road rash, back in spasm, bruise like a football on leg possible cracked/bruised ribs. Back is very painful.

Bike - rear derailleur smashed but I haven't seen it yet.

Moral of story, slow down when going downhill on roads that are damp and a curve approaches, and consider wearing a helmet as the kind of accident I had it definitely saved me as I was upside down when my helmet hit the road. But we had the discussion in A & E and doctor stated that rotational injuries are a risk with helmets but in my case I definitely WAS saved by the helmet. Oh and it was an Aldi helmet btw.

Cracking a solo.
Really pleased you're not more seriously injured Techno, sounds like it could have been an awful lot worse, get well soon. Any idea why the car was there, was it just stopped in the middle of the road?

With regard to the quote below however, from what I've read on this forum I think I might grab the popcorn, sure theres a smiley for that but I can't find it

I definitely WAS saved by the helmet. Oh and it was an Aldi helmet btw.

Hope you recover quickly.

Always take care when going around corners which you can't see around or see the road surface of.

Get better soon, and hope you can get back on your bike soon.

I had a crash (not as serious as yours) about two months ago in the wet on a roundabout, and am now super-cautious in the wet, falling off a bike at any speed can hurt like hell....and I made the mistake of not riding regularly following my crash but am not getting back into the swing of things.

Cheers chaps. Dunno if the bike is fixable. Aimed to buy a new one anyway this just hastens it.

It is getting better as the day goes on, but staying still whilst sleeping is gonna be of no use so expect more pain.

Oh and I normally go the other side of the border into beautiful Suffolk but both are gorgeous.

Tim,
I know how sore you feel. My guess work around how long these things take to heal are :
Bruising a week.
Road rash 2 weeks
Broken bones 6 weeks.

If you can get the road rash in the sun it seems to help, the heat improves the circulation and hence healing and the UV kills off bacteria. You need to be very careful running around without your pants trying to get the sun where it does not usually shine.

Cheers chaps. Shame there is no sun. Went to doctors because of negative side effects of pain killers got some stronger ones now. Not being able to sleep is the worst hopefully the new painkillers will help.

I did a rib 2 years ago but nothing like this bad and the leg is well painful. Also sprained a wrist.

Six weeks is about when I will be bike shopping so that is fine.

Ouch.

Have you got insurance, as you'll need it to pay for the car damage ! PS be careful when you can't see round corners, and slow down when it's wet - diesel will have you off.

im a little tea pot
glad its not serious and you'll be up and about soon!

i too am an advocate for wearing helmets! i had my (helmeted) head bounce off a kerb when i had an off earlier this year so know just how much damage would have been done had you not been wearing one!

after 6 weeks i reckon you'll be bouncing off the walls waiting for your new bike!!!
