Not really commuting just a leisure ride with a mate of mine.
Weather: on/off drizzle/light rain
Circumstances: Back roads of Northern Essex very little traffic probably passed or passed by six cars in five miles. First three and half was mostly uphill fairly easy though new chain needed bedding in so some changes were clunky if not failing at times (despite it working when tested)
The last mile and a half was mostly downhill/flat, fairly steep at times. I have never done this route this way round so the hazard when I reached it was an unpleasant surprise.
Downhill, picking up speed, long left hander on single lane road. I turned the corner and there is a pink peuguot in the road, slammed on anchors skidded. hit front wing then airborne, landed on helmet then flipped onto right side and rolled (cheers to my dad for making me learn how to fall properly).
Laid on my back, I was fully conscious but my lower right back hurting like buggery. Locals on hand within seconds to look after me, blankets, space blankets and good informed first aid and a motorcyclist who took charge as knew the dangers.
Ambulance arrives quickly. They strapped me up like a turkey at christmas on a back board and neck brace. Cops take ages to arrive and copper doesn't know his phonetic alphabet as I spell my name. I am told I skidded on oil on road (oil and drizzle do not mix)
Car needs new front wing. Driver unhurt by all accounts. When I see my helmet I thank god I was wearing it. I am sure it saved me from serious brain injury if not the morgue.
Am I injured, some road rash, back in spasm, bruise like a football on leg possible cracked/bruised ribs. Back is very painful.
Bike - rear derailleur smashed but I haven't seen it yet.
Moral of story, slow down when going downhill on roads that are damp and a curve approaches, and consider wearing a helmet as the kind of accident I had it definitely saved me as I was upside down when my helmet hit the road. But we had the discussion in A & E and doctor stated that rotational injuries are a risk with helmets but in my case I definitely WAS saved by the helmet. Oh and it was an Aldi helmet btw.
