My chain is slipping on the biggest front chainring I only use that ring never any of the other two . It slips for just a second or two and it always seems to happen when I am not in the saddle or getting up some speed

it is very annoying as it makes a loud cracking noise and worse still very dangerous the bb is ok I am certain about that is the chain the problem as there is quite a bit of play in it on the chainring

Also what chain would you recommend if a have to fit a new one my bike is a 18 speed hybrid

Well I am thinking since you only use the big chain ring... and happens under pressure... check the big chain ring for wear off signs... I would take a look at the cassette as well.. If you never change either cassette or chain there is a chance you might have to replace both..

Good luck..

I think that's what happened to mine. I used the big and small chainring and left the middle out.

Look closely at your chainring for signs of 'sharks teeth' - looks like this:

(Though that's a particularly bad example.)

Compare the shape of the teeth on the big ring with the others - if they look sharkey by comparison, you need to change your chainring.

Can you tighten up the chainring? You mention play, is that side to side play of the actual chain ring, or play in the chain on the chainring. If the actually chainring is not secure, then that could easily be the source of your problem.

It is play in the chain on the chainring

So what should a chainring that is in good condition look like

Well, like this:

No 'sharks teeth' look...all nice & symmetrical.

I had the same on a MTB just on the large chain ring, as soon as it was changed it was fine. Plus a new chain.

Are these chainrings ok for further use or is it time to replace them ? . Also are the chainrings on a hybrid bike the same diameter as those on a racing bike ?

Most hybrids have smaller chainrings than most road/racing bikes. Although you say you don't use it the middle chainring is the worst worn to my eyes but the outer's pretty knacked as well.

You will almost certainly need a new chain and cassette as well.

I had one worse than that. Looked like a school of sharks.

The previous owner must have been using it as I have never used it as I have said I have only used the big chainring

so you reckon change the lot chainrings , chain and the cassette
