.........I went over to Walton on Thames to watch the London to Surrey Cycling Classic this morning, and then cycled over to Esher to see them head back into London.

The roads were closed all the way back into London for a few hours after the race went through, so I like a few other cyclists decided to take advantage of the 'car less' roads. There were a couple of sections where the stewards made you get off the road (part of Kingston), but Richmond Park was fantastic as was the section after.

Had to head along Embankment, but hey it was pretty quiet and when I got home to Lewisham I was knackered - don't think I've ever done such a fast ride - if only roads were like that every Sunday

Anyone else take advantage?

*cough* On my rides in the Forest of Bowland I sometimes don't see a car for 10 to 20 minutes and then it's only a farmer's Landy. That's on a weekday, mind, Sundays can be a bit quieter until the tourists come out.

Which is good. Cars can really get in the way going down some of those twisty descents ;) Did the loop from Beacon Fell clockwise round the Trough and back to Beacon Fell myself last week. Fabulous weather and clear views - you could see all the way to the wind turbines on the east coast of the Lakes beyond Barrow. Saw very few other cyclists too.

Do you find them a beautiful sight? I do. They are quite mesmerizing at times I find.

Some but not when they are despoiling beautiful landscapes which is what most of the land based ones will have to do if they are to be in places where the wind is reliable enough.

There are dozens and dozens around the plain of Chartres in France (a flat, dull wheat-growing area). At night they are lit to warn aircraft - an extraordinary sight as I drive past.
