A roof box? on what is likely a convertible. What year and what model, some you can get a towball for, then mount a rack on that. Failing that my son used to take his wheels out and slide the bits into the passenger side.

If you follow that link through it does suggest the saris bones.

But then a search on mx5 and bones gets some comments about the boot being somewhat flexible
and no longer flush after 2 years and another comment about the bumper.
Can't see you fitting a towbar to an mx5 so I'd say forget it.

When I had a MR2 (Mk1) and then an MGF I found a Blackburn rack* fit over the boot was great (apart from access to the boot, obviously) for 2 bikes. On the MGF I also had the rear luggage rack (clips on the boot lid without obstructing it) which would take one bike with the wheels off.

Actually this is a good point, I've still got the rack somewhere although I no longer have a car - time for Ebay/Freegle me thinks

*somewhat similar to the Saris bones affair, it goes from folded flat to make two 'legs' which fit on the boot lid and the back above the bumper (can obscure the number plate) with the bike supports sticking out. You can alter the angles of all three parts so it can be fit over a spoiler (MR2) without any problem. The whole thing clips on with adjustable straps and is quite secure - no problems whizzing down the M-way or bouncy dirt tracks.

I have a Mk3 MX-5 and I use the Saris Bones rack. Works a treat and will also fit pretty much any other car you can think of. I have the 3-bike rack, although I've never carried more than one bike on the MX-5.

The comment about the boot lid has some truth - it is a little flexy, so just be careful how tight you pull the straps on the rack. You don't need to have the straps "solid wood" tight, just firm enough that the rack is stable when you give it a little push/pull to check. Also, best to stop after a few minutes and re-check that nothing has loosened off. I would also recommend using some small cloth patches to put under the rubber feet to protect the boot lid paintwork.

I've used it probably between 10 and 20 times or so without any problems, on twisty country road trips and on several long (3 to 4 hr) motorway journeys. It also folds up and fits into the MX-5 boot (well just, with a little persuasion!) so you don't need to leave it outside the car.
