Can anyone suggest clip on type mudguards to go on a cx bike? Bought SKS P45's and they look near impossible to fit... I don't want to show up at work with a brown streak up my back..

I'd head to my LBS and ask them to sell you and fit a pair that fits - or pay them to fit the SKS ones

What is making them hard to fit?

First problem was not having a bolt long enough to fit through my front fork! But looking at how the stays fit I think they need spacers or something, they don't seem to be an obvious fit. But I am a girl. Might just pay someone who knows what they're doing, the instructions aren't the best. I had no idea this would be a complicated thing!

The instructions are never great no matter which mudguards you buy. Take some pictures of the fork and close ups of where you imagine the bolt goes and where the stays will fit. Someone on here might be able to help.

Only fitted a couple of sets of guards, but they are fiddly and time consuming at first.
Helps to have a few spare bolts/washers to add to the ones that come with the set in case of weird fitting requirements

I had similar problem fitting Tortec mudguards to my CX bike. There's an assumption that you can use the bolt that fixes the brake to the frame, but with cantilevers there are no bolts to use.

Went down to LBS and they found something I could use among their store of nuts and bolts. Must say though, I think they should be supplied with the fixing kit.

Many forks for cantilevers have a couple of holes where a caliper brake would go, but if there isn't a usable hole in the fork crown, you can remove the standard fork crown fitting from the mudguard and use zip ties instead.
Standard SKS P35 mudguards.

From the outside. Note the bit of rubber jammed between the mudguard and the underside of the fork crown. The cable ties where holding the mudguard higher than the underside of the brake caliper, with the result that the front end of the mudguard got forced down onto the tyre.

2 pairs of holes either side of the mudguard centreline, made with the reamer bit of my swiss army knife and the hole edges sealed with a spoke heated on the gas.
hob.

If you are using caliper brakes, mudguards are easiest if you replace the allen nut by one of these nuts from Gilles Berthoud (also available in 9, 22 and 30mm lengths). They tighten up using a regular spanner, and are threaded inside so you can attach the mudguard using a bottle cage bolt or similar. The Problem Solvers Fender Nut is similar.

Full mudguards need a tweek or two for them to fit the many different bikes there are out there. I have always found SKS guards with no trouble on my bikes and have 4 sets bought for my road bikes with the best fitting my boardman comp.
