Why not use a smaller diameter metric but and bolt
I just checked my 1950's Carpenter and a m5 hex head bolt fits with no problems.
I bought a set of these about a year ago - stainless, seems to last well and cheap:

How can that be a bodge !!!!That is an option, feels like a slight bodge though.

Nice work - didn't realise you had the original bolt and in that case it should just be a (relatively) straighforward process of measuring its OD and ascertaining it's thread pitch - which I imagine is what you've already done. Good luck getting it sortedI might have found the answer, looks like they are 10-32 UNF
But now you are using new bolts of a different design so surely that is also a bodge !!Because the eyelet is threaded my inner fussiness means I want to use the correct bolts.
To be fair, a single bolt that fits the threaded hole will not protrude inboard of the frame and present potential clearance issues like a nut would. But now you are using new bolts of a different design so surely that is also a bodge !!
