Regular
Good evening all,

As a regular rider of a mountain bike i decided to invest in a road bike about 6 months ago, for my commute to work and to save wear and tear on my MTB. I opted for a Specialized Allez (bottom of the range model) and my problem is, now the weather has started to turn i would like to fit some long mudguards; looking at the usual sites (CRC, Wiggle, etc) i see to fit this type of guard, extra 'fixing points' are needed near the bottom bracket and near the quick release for the back wheel. Does anyone know if there are any universal fixing kits out there or how to get round this? I would prefer to have the 'longs' as i have been on a couple of runs with a club and they have suggested i get them.

Sorry in advance if this question has already been asked, i have had a look round the site though and couldn't find anything.

Have a look at the crud roadracer guards as they clip onto the bike so don't need fixing points

There's also SKS raceblades

Noting you will be riding with a club.

Both SKS Raceblades and Crud Roadracer's are IMO inadequite if riding in a group, the SKS Raceblades are not long enough, they might keep you mostly dry but your club mates will not be very happy following you, the Crud Road racers are OK, but very flimsy (you will be constantly adjusting them and if you leave the bike leaned up wrong by accident, they will warp and you will have to then stand the bike the other way to reset it) and are not quite wide enough (shame really because they have that nice wide section for keeping shoot of the front mech which is a nice feature).

However, the SKS Raceblades also come in a long variation, these are quite good and you can add additional flappage to reduce the spray even further.

P clips.... that is all you need, they very cheap and cheerful, but strong, hard wearing and do the job extremely.

Lois has a full sus Hybrid for commuting and general cycling and also a full sus Mountain bike for fun, and I have fitted full length mudguards to both of her bikes, and my mountain bike using stainless steel P clips with soft rubber lining strips which does not mark paint work.

Tough, reliable, corroision resistant and available in a wide range of sizes and all for just a few pennies. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/W4-304-St...rial_Nails_Fixing_MJ&var=&hash=item43adba012c

They are brillant as are SKS. I bought two sets of the longs from Jan and April (a part broke out on a ride and had to leave the rear guard at the road side) anyway decide to re-fit and emailed SKS asking if the would send a couple of the under brake attachments, they asked what version I have and I sent them pics from Wiggle and sent out two brand new sets as there had been a recall. The new design improves them a lot. Wiggle however are still selling the old style and never informed me of the recall..

I get zero noise from them and zero rear splash, the fronts still get a splash from a puddle but hardly anything from normal road wetness. The only downside is that they do not protect the front mech and seat post, but I can live with that.

Just to add they make changing a tyre a bit of faff as you have to remove them, if you don't remove them like I did it weakens the under brake bracket which will eventully break when you least want it two.

The long ones are good, I have a set sat waiting to go on, probably tomorrow before Sunday's club run!

The short one's are essentially a good design, they just aren't long enough for club/group riding

Make sure they have the circle QR attachments and not the fork ones. The fork ones were recalled

As in the bit that fits over your QR skewer or the bit that goes onto the brake mount? Mine have a circle bit that goes over the QR but fork bits for the brake mount.
