Mine are probably that and I have no problems. I run Topeak Reflector full-length 20/26mm mudguards on a Kinesis Racelight with 23mm tyres. I had Blumels before them and ran them with a similar clearance without issue.

Depends on the bike, the tyres and the expected use, which you don't mention.

Road bike with 25mm tyres on tarmac & I'd say 4mm would be fine. My son's commuter bike with 32mm tyres and an occasional towpath and we've got about 15mm. CX bike running off road tyres and, if guards were used at all, I'd be looking for 25mm+.

For a while I run 25mm tyres on the tighter geometry Kinesis Grand Fondo, the clearance would have been less and there was no real issue apart from picking up the occasional leaf or other object which was a bit noisy but never really done any harm.

That'll only be an issue if your rough tracks are muddy rough tracks. Mud won't clear from that sort of gap, it'll just keep on building until you stop or something breaks.

That looks like ok clearance to me as long as it's for road riding. Make sure you clean under the mudguard when you're cleaning the bike. My favourite bit of kit this time of year is my 5L garden pressure sprayer - it's great for knocking the mud off but easy to keep the flow away from hubs/headsets etc.

Does anyone remember Jimboalee who insisted that you should have a minimum of 1.5" just in case a slug got sucked up into the 'guard?
