Hi Everyone

i am using knobbly tyres on my MTB, 26 inch wheels, commuting into work is hard work, i was wondering it would be better to put some road tyres on as my commute is all road.

Would this improve my commute in terms of speed?
What tyres would you recommend?

Thanks

How hard are they pumped up? For road use they need to be at their maximum pressure; the easiest way to achieve this is to buy a Topeak track pump. Once you own a track pump you can call yourself a proper cyclist.

When the snow melts go and buy something about 1.6" wide designed for commuting, i.e. with a narrow ridge round the middle. The bike will ride on this and go much faster but if you venture off road the ridge will sink in and the other grips will make contact.

When I switched from 26x2.2 DMR off-road tyres to 26x1.5 Schwalbe City Jets, the time for my comparison test route dropped by over 10%.

So, yes it would be better if you are staying on the road (they are completely crap in mud!) and I would recommend the City Jets.

sounds a plan

Both tyres are around 47 psi, tyre wall rated to 50. I do however need to invest some of my chrimbo money on a track pump ;)

Did the same as Norm and now i fly along, cut my 30 minute commute by up to 8 minutes.
I recommend 1.5 city jets, good grip and punture resistance.

IMO i would go for the 1.5.

The slicks on my son's MTB make it much quicker on the road, but even with slicks a MTB is still hard work on the roads (somehow the seating position on a MTB seems less than optimal for roads).
