MTB Tyres

Hi,

I have an MTB which I use mainly as a winter bike and don`t actually do very much mountain biking on it. I was wondering if I can change the tyres for something which will roll along much easier. The ones on there just now are fantastically chunky still after about 4 years of riding, they don`t seem to have lost any tread at all!

The existing tyres are made by Maxxis but don`t appear to have a name and they are 26 x 2.1 - I saw some slicker 26 x 1.9`s in Decathlon, would they fit OK?

Any advice well appreciated!

You can get pretty skinny slick tyres for a mountain bike if you don't ride off road much. Makes riding much easier on road.

I take in round the local country park sometimes and it can be a bit boggy and rutted in places so I don`t want anything to slick, I still want some grip

You can go lower than 1.9's

How low can I get away with then, do either of you have any recommendations

Can get Schwalbe Durano Plus 26x1.35 ( check absolutecycles on ebay, been selling pairs at 99p start or £25 delivered.
Schwalbe Cityjets are 1.5 or 1.9 wide. Halfords were selling pair for £15 i think.
The Duranos have the best puncture protection. Both are pretty much slicks

I don`t think I would want slicks as I still intend to go over surfaces that I wouldn`t take my road bike on!

Something like Schwalbe
Landcruisers might be what you're after

Aye, something like that looks good - will investigate further!

Could also consider one the Schwalbe Marathon variants

Just an up-date - went for the Landcruisers and can complain at £20 for a pair of tyres. Initial cycling shows that I am quicker by about 2/3 mph so am happy with that! Bizarrely tho, I did like the old super-duper chunky tyres cos after about 40 miles, you knew your legs had had a good workout lol
