So I'm pretty new to biking and I live on the welsh heritage coast with a coastal path that leads into a park with loads of woodland trails so I've bought a used Giant ATX 850. All is good and I've been replacing a few items that are easy to do but I have an issues with tyres. The front says 26 x 1.95 so good but the rear looks a lot fatter but as the side wall is now like bare canvas all around and just touching it means the rubber just crumbles off in your hand then it doesn't have a size on it. I'm just thinking to put a set of new 26 x 1.95 tyres on it front and rear so should I try a fatter rear? Does it make much difference? Also what brand? I saw on eBay a set og Kenda K816 tyres that look aggressive tread but the reviews say they have weak tyre walls and will that uber aggressive tread be poor if I ride on the roads? The Raleigh CST Eiger tyres are everywhere online and look ok I think? Gutted Halfords were selling their £25 a piece puncture resistant tyres for £7 a go but missed the deal by 1 day!

So! Tyres! Is there a good decent brand that's not gonna cost the earth or am I looking too much into it and just buy either of the above tyres ?

After them id think any tyre will be aws8me..lol

mountain king and maxiss advantage in the 2,0 or 2.2 will be good..especially the Advantage..
halfords tyres are ok but budget items, but try next day tyres..

Have a look and post a " i like these" and we can go from there.
some tyres like the 2.2 conti trail kings are very large so probably wont fit your bike..

I have tried some Continental X-kings that have been great off-road and even run well on tarmac too. Not as fast as slicks, but better than other knobblies.

Another you could try is the Maxxis Crossmark, nice tyre and will also run well on tarmac.

The mountain kings will be fine.there wire bead but light and good for most riding .they are even ok on road for an off road tyre.
the extra volume will make for a more enjoyable feel to the bike too.

One thing to consider, does your bike have rim or disc brakes? I think your bike is an early to mid 90's bike, so you may be restricted in how wide a tyre you can fit, discs would allow a slightly wider tyre, rim brakes would probably mean sticking with 1.95" tyres, however it depends on how much room there is between the seat stays, some mtb tyres do inflate very wide these days so may rub.
