Is it possible to use a mtb triple flat bar gear shifter with a road double front mech and chainset?

No problem. While Shimano mtb shifter will pull more cable per click than a Shimano road double mech needs, since the limits are controlled/set by the limit screws, the cable can be set somewhat loose at low and just right when pulled into high.

I had a Carrera Gryphon with a Shimano Nexus front mech on a 36/50 Prowheel Gloria Double chainset operated by a SRAM X4 triple MTB trigger shifter. Optical display showed 1 for 36 and 2 for 50, 3 was not used.

Done this with a gripshifter, compact chainset and a road mech. No problem at all.
Triple is a different matter, but a double is fine.
