One of my colleagues started talking to me about buying a Hard-Tail MTB after observing my passion for MTBs. He wants to buy one of the models I have selected for myself: Axxis, Fusion or Tempest

First one is SS and rest two have gears. Particularly he is looking forward to drive with his roommate sitting on the horizontal iron rod of the Frame (thats where your friends will sit, in India):

So is this a good idea to buy one of those bikes ?

nice tandem!
for a cheaper option there are bars available to attach to the back of the bike (remembering childhood bmx's) which can be stood up on. i dont know how practicle that is but will be comfier than sitting on the frame

Well, Frame is quite comfortable for us (yeah, me too  ). I thought when another person is sitting on the frame then gears will help a lot.

It's all up to how hard your friend wants to pedal.... Yes, gears will help.

(BTW, that picture you put up isn't a hardtail, you realise?)

You might find people on here can't help, or tell you off for this, since most of us are from Britain where it's illegal to carry someone on a bike unless it's specially designed for it - although I know it's much more common in many countries like India, where whole families can travel on one bike. (I did once see 4 boys on one BMX - one pedalling, one sitting on the saddle, one standing on the rear stunt pegs and one sitting on the handlebars:o).

A more comfortable way might be to get a bike with a rear pannier rack and out a cushion on that for the passenger to ride on. There are even taxis that operate that way in Africa...
