My son has knobbly Bontrager tyres on his Trek, which are fine if he's going Off-off road like we did yesterday, but he's also riding it in CycloX events.
Would a slightly smoother tyre be better & if so, can anyone recomend which ones, (preferably with some puncture resistance)
Cheers

I have actually done some research into this and this is the best CX tyre I found for that size wheel.

Obviously if it's as dry as it has been lately, you could get away with something even smoother, but this is a good cover all conditions pattern.

*Edit - oh yeah, the link - dur...

For the current conditions this would be better, but I am not sure you want to run two sets, and I think these will struggle later on in the season.

The first ones look pretty much like what he has now. I just noticed at Happy Valley the other week that the older kids all had much smoother tyres, ok, they had much smoother bikes too  But figured huge chunky tyres would be a factor, i've just been given a set of wheels, so was thinking of sticking some slicker tyres on them & just using them when he doing cycloX

When you move to 26'' wheels the choice of available tyres opens up dramatically, and at 700c the world is your oyster, but at 20'' and 24'' it's more of a struggle to find something grippy but fast rolling.

At 26'' the Schwalbe CX Pro is a wicked CX clincher in the 1.35'' size.

Edit: a lot of the kids running Luath's have access to dad's/mum's (or club's) wheel collection, so can get a lot more specialized in their tyre choices.

Obviously the best tyres for CX are the CX focused tubs, but that needs a tubular wheelset plus the tubs themselves are £70+ each. And you need to become a whizz at gluing them.
