Until recently, Mrs G has only occasionally ridden her Scott Contessa MTB on holidays and the occasional summer jaunt, however after being close enough to her office to have been able to walk for the last 5 years, her base has been moved out of town and she has recently started to commute the 5 miles on the bike.
After 2 weeks of this, in trainers and tracky bottoms with padded shorts underneath, she came home Friday asking how much it would take for her to convert to proper cycling shoes.
I did a bit swapping around of pedals and fitted her the DX SPDs that have been on my G-Zero for years, replacing them with the original Scott SPDs, that have been in a drawer for years.
Headed off to the LBS and while I checked out a few road bikes, the boss treat herself to a pair of Scott 'Comp' shoes complete with cleats; overshoes, Altura jacket, jersey & tights.
Once I set her cleats up, she had a few practice runs in the street and has really taken to them. I have warned her however, that it's when she starts to get used to them and stops concentrating that the complacency can set in and catch her out.
