I would consider looking at 24 inch wheel hard tail mountain bikes from major cycle manufacturers.
Keep away from unbranded cheap bikes from tesco, ebay and similar as these will be exceptionally heavy and not enjoyable to ride.

It is very difficult to be more specific without knowing more information such as height to get an indication, but something such as these may be the ticket.

Depends upon your lads height, but he may be able to get on a small full size MTB.

The Ridgeback. MX24 is good. My lad has that and a full size Carrera Vengeance.

Depends on his height, and what he intends to do with it. Is he likely to want to ride loads of XC and go exploring bridle ways and so on, or is he more likely to want to rag it round skills parks and trail centres? Is he going to be sedate and glued to the ground or is he going to go looking for places to shred and jump and so on?

The standard response will be a hardtail. If you look around you'll find 14 and 16 inch Hardtails aplenty. If he wants to ride competitively, racing and so on, look for a hardtail XC oriented bike. Otherwise look for something more trail oriented, or dirt jump style. Something like a Scott Voltage, NS Surge, DMR Reptoid etc.. Hell, he may even get on with a big BMX.

Until we know how big the lad is we can't really makea recommendation. Cubester was 5'9" " at 11 and rode an 18 inch XC bike.

He reached 6'0" by 14 and stopped growing upwards. He plays rugby at district, too small for a prop he plays hooker at West Yorkshire. A bit of gym work now sees him with 16" biceps, 18 inch calves, and quads that mean he can't wear standard jeans. He tips the scales somewhere north of 16 stone. A hybrid meso/endomorph, he packs slabs of muscle on for fun, but carries a bit too much gut . I am virtually the same proportions as him, but his mum is 4' 10". His twin sister is 5'9".

From what I can determine you may find some 6 speed ez fire shifters on ebay, but if not, you can use a 7 speed shifter and the derailleur limit will stop you over shifting if you set it up properly.
