mountain bike wheels

I have a pair of wheels and wonder if they're worth selling, I know nothing about mtb.

The hubs are Shimano Deore XT (HB-M737) and the rims are Mavic M231 (559 x 17).

What do you think they're worth?

They are nice wheels but second hand MTB stuff has problems because you don't know the provenance and whether they've been battered around and cleaned up.

My neighbour gave them to me when he moved; they came off his bike when he upgraded and only rode on the road anyway.

Care to hazard a guess at their worth (not you Foss)?

There's a pair of these rims on the 'bay on LX hubs at 70 quid and still bidding. Don't know if that's any guide. They are certainly "Old School". Are they disc specific?

A little more research and I've learned that XT is Shimano's second tier MTB groupset. The rims are well regarded too, so I think I'll put them up for sale.

I think that this is the telling question. If they only take rim brakes, I would expect them to be worth much less.

I would think that the lack of disc mounts would reduce the market, but not necessarily the value, as someone building / renovating an older MTB would be after them and would be frustrated by the number of disc-bossed hubs around. For instance, I've a rigid-framed Giant from the very late 1980s that these would be perfect for.

Something I noticed which you might be able to expand on: the nipples are anodised purple except for the two at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock. Does this indicate a handbuilt wheel?

Not sure. Could be hand built, or hand repaired They look in good nick, let me know if SoltyDog turns them down, and if the price is right, I'll take them off you
