Hello,
My son's Ridgeback mx2 has 26 x 1.95 knobly tyres, can I put narrower, slicker tyres on; if so, what size (Width can I go down to.)? I was also considering changing the cassette to Shimano HG50 8 speed 13/26T., from the 14/34T it already has just to try to make the bike more road usable as he never goes off-road. Any suggestions, please?

Lots of 26" slick or semi slick tyres available. Probably 1.25 inch minimum. I dont really think there would be much point changing the cassette if the bike currently has a triple chainring.

go for a slick tyre about 1.5 or 1.6 in size. The really narrow ones will lower the bike too much and will also look really stupid!

If its a mtb has it got suspension and can you lock it off? this will make the ride "faster " as you are not wasting energy compressing the suspension on each pedal stroke. What speed does he pedal at? most people recommend about 90 rpm for the legs , if your going that fast then you would maybe look at a cassette as a last option.

If it's a full size mountain bike you would want the 26" wheel version of the City Jets - link

Whatever tyres you out on it, the higher the pressure you can put in them the better they will roll, so look to pump the tyres up towards the maximum pressure stated on the sidewall.

OOPs thnaks for the correct i just clicked city jet  linky corrected

Gti Junior's Islabike came with Innova street tyres in 26x1.6, they are effectively a slick but with grooves and a texture. They are fast on tarmac and pretty good on anything but wet mud and they didn't look silly at all. Pump them up to about 40 lbs.

Don't bother with the gears, he will not appreciate the change and kids need a big gear anyway for hills.
