mountain bike rear mech on road bike?

Hi all, a very quick question - I picked up an old road bike from fleabay and am trying to do it up on the cheap. Have stripped everything I can (all barring stem/forks and crank - both run fine, if a little dry, a trip to LBS may be needed for them) but the rear mech (a triplex extra) is a little bit buggered. Now, I have an old marin muirwoods that I can cannibalise which has an STX rear mech - is there anything to stop me using this on a 5 speed cassette (it was on a 7 previously) when controlled by a friction down-tube shifter?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

It should work fine. I have done similar in the past.

Should work just fine. Iirc stx-rc were the predecessor of Deore, i.e. of decent quality. It should also index correctly with modern Shimano or Shimano compatible shifters if you want.
