The M74 extension in Glasgow ,which isn't yet open to cars, opened up for a bikes and runners yesterday. I think about 10'000 or so had signed up to sample the 15km or so of fresh smooth tarmac (not sure of the total numbers who attended - i reckon the wind and rain would have meant a few decided to stay in their beds!). Was great to see so many novices and families with young kids out for which completing the full route will have been a real achievement, particularly with the strong headwind on the return leg.

on a cycle touring holiday in the 90's the French lorry drivers blockaded all the motorways, forcing traffic onto the smaller roads,It was really dangerous on the bike as you had all the motorway traffic diverting onto the small roads.i came upto a motorway junction that was bockaded and made my was down the slip road (to the cheers of the drivers)for an hour or so of traffic free cycling !!!

They should do this to all motorways once a year!

I think they may close sections in Belgium and Germany once a year. Last year there was a 60km stretch closed between Dortmund and Duisburg and nearly a million went for a ride - and another couple of million attended parties on the other lanes. Must have been amazing to experience!
