Could it not be that more noise is a result of more traffic, and more traffic means more danger from traffic, and the association with noise is irrelevant, as I pointed out in my earlier post? A case of mixing up cause and effect? Traffic noise doesn't kill. Higher traffic density does (or did the study adjust for traffic density?).

The study looked at the Rate of heart disease. Unless there's some causation of higher traffic density causing heart trouble. Maybe pollution? I made my hypothesis on the fact that the issues mentioned are also often related to stress.

Ah, I was waiting for that one. I know we don't see much of it, but you remember that big red thing in the sky? Seriously, clean production of plentiful energy is a broader problem. But you can guarantee that electricity emissions will not make your nigh street a dangerous place to breathe in (or engulf a group ride in a cloud of smoke!).

Separately, Elon Musk has a company which supplies solar panels on a fully funded (financed), basis in the USA, and he's developed a battery which will enable households to become energy independent (ie go off grid). The technology may not be perfect yet, but it's certainly going in the right direction. There are also solar films which are under development, which will be a much cheaper and convenient solution.

I think the idea about electric being as bad as ICE due to the fact that you still have to product the electricity, is a little jurassic, and belongs with Clarkson/ light entertainment.
Far better IMO to encourage people NOT to need to travel in their separate little tin compartments than to find new ways of powering the things.
If only there was an alternative, say a way of getting around powered by the traveller themselves. they could be made quite a bit smaller and might need less than 4 wheels.
Just a thought. :bicycle:

Sorry, my bad, but my assertion still stands in terms of, if there's no causal link, then there's nothing to indicate that noise is relevant. Could be any one of a number of factors (could be that people living in areas of higher traffic density just live more stressful lives, or get more stressed by traffic, and the noise has nothing to do with it. Causal link is where association begins to become relevant.

Presumably you don't have kids, or need to travel for business, or buy lots of shopping, or ever travel further than you can ride, etc etc etc. I think we can safely assume that most on this forum will ride when they have a choice, but that hardly replaces the need for a car for most of us.

2 kids, 6 grandkids and 1 great grandson, Trains and a Trailer for shopping. :cycle:

EDIT I will add that Maz now has a bus-pass and quite enjoys pottering into town these days to shop and meet up with friends and ex-colleagues for coffee/chats.
The most awkward thing I brought home on the bike was a 3.8 metre stair handrail strapped to the crossbar of my bike.

Speakers may not be a bad idea. Instead of recorded engine noise or horn, there should just be an automated pleasant message! Morning, passing right, have a great ride.
Interesting ... a bit like digital cameras that make an imitation of a mechanical SLR sound, complete with motor drive sometimes.

We could have cars that make feet crunching on gravel noise when going at walking speed, moving up through clippy clop horse noises and so on.

I have certainly been surprised by sneaky electric cars while out on foot. I can't recall a cycling incident. Maybe once they get up above walking speed the tyre noise becomes audible.
