I have had rear wheels on a couple of bikes go very rapidly now. First one all spokes turned out loosed very rapidly during a ride and it went bendy. Second one, I heard a ping after a long ride, the wheel was untrue and when I looked turned out had 3-4 broken spokes.

I'm wondering if this is due to the odd occation when the lock is thru the back wheel and you move it without remembering to take it off. It doesn't happen THAT often and never actually get as far as mounting the bike, but just wondered if anyone else had a similar problem and found this as the culprit. The guy in the LBS noticed all spokes on back wheel where broken on the disc side, which is apparently unusual.

The lock problem won't have helped.

Maybe it's time to learn how to tension and true your own wheels? It's really not that difficult if you take it slow and steady, there's lots on the web about it especially on Sheldon Brown's site. A quick check of the spoke tension every couple of months might pay dividends and it will increase your confidence in maintaining your bike.

You're right, it's a good idea. I'm certainly going to be keeping an eye on them now. Think I will also tape up the lock dayglo so it's fairly obvious when it's on in case that's the issue.
