I know we already mentioned his retirement in the Vuelta thread, but I thought it deserved it's own little corner, especially as this rider's career contrasts completely with what's going on in the LA threads.

Nice piece on him in CN.

Always a bit eccentric, a square peg in a round hole, but a great climber who could've done even more than he did if he'd put his mind to it, but he rode for pleasure more than for glory. And a clean rider too - we need more guys like him in the peloton imo.

has anyone got any interesting links to add to this.........?

He always reminded me of the enthusiastic amateur who had gate crashed the pro's party. Hang around on their coatails and look the part, but every so often spring into life when the profile and fancy took him ^_^

I for one will miss him. He was probably born 50 years too late.

Yes, I liked him, too.

He was always in my fantasy teams: he was always going to feature in a few stages at the TdeF.

And he was loyal to Cofidis for the entirety of his 16-year-long career.

It must have been the other 8 that screwed your team then Dayvo!

Oh that's sad news. Great rider. Millar speaks very highly of him in his book. Who knows had Millar roomed or lived with him in his Cofidis years things could have worked out different for him.
