My groupset is all shimano 105 other than crank which is fsa (bb30)
The cassette is 11-28 which is great for hilly rides but most of mine are on very flat terrain so struggle to get a good cadence, I want to change it for something like 12-25
If I replace with the same 105 5700 cassette and chain cost will be about £80-£90 but if I use other compatible components I can do it for about half the cost.
Unsure which way to go, will other brand/grade parts make a noticeable difference to performance or shifting?
What way have others gone?

If you look at some new bikes they often mix different groupsets, normally a way of keeping the cost down.
You can often see Tiagra mixed with 105.

I do not know if this is true but someone once mentioned "trickle down", that is this years 105 will be rebadged as Tiagra in a couple/few years time.

I would just use a Tiagra 4600 cassette and a KMC chain, unless you are bothered about weight which I guess would be next to nothing. Not sure about the shifting, but probably negligible difference if any. Probably cost you less than half going that way, for parts that wear out like these it seems to make a lot of sense.

Must be my lucky day have just bought a new 105 12-25 cassette on an ebay auction £28 with postage, was the only bidder, result^_^
Cheers accountantpete, I have used KNC links before but never the chain how do you rate it against the shimano HG chains?

I'm a Campagnolo man myself but KMC (my error above) rate very well alongside Campagnolo chains.

There are different models with more expensive lightweight chains available ( like the KMC X10SL) but I stick to the KMC x10
as per this ad (which doesn't state that it has the quick links)
