Why did a bike shop selling brand new bike refused to give me the frame number of the Brmpton I was buying?

i was buying a brand new Brompton from a business seller on ebay (Wheelie Direct in Swansea and have a VAT no.), however they told me the sticker for the serial number is missing, so I asked them for the frame number (stamped on the frame) in order to check with Brompton to get the serial number back. To my surprise, they replied and said they cannot tell me the frame number for obvious reason. I do not understand what their OBVIOUS reason is. I don't think it is stolen as it is a brand new bike, I know people who has cycle to work scheme with Wheelie Direct and they have been doing business on ebay for a number of years with 99.9% positive feedback.

I actually did humbly asked them about the 'obvious' reason for not giving me the frame number, they did not bother to explain to me, canceled my transaction and relisted the item. Their attitude is like 'Just give me the money and don't ask question'. They made me feel I was asking inappropriate question. Can you help me out and give me an explaination? What can I do with their frame number anyway? Is it inapproiate to ask for frame number of a new bike?

Another ebay buyer has come across a bike with a formal sticker saying VOID sticking at the place where the serial number should be. He did not buy at last. But anyone know what does it mean why there is a VOID sticker?
