OK it's probably not a miracle, but I was surprised.

Twenty minutes before the start of the Richmond Park TT I had a rear wheel puncture, I changed tubes, inflated, pop, second puncture.

Clearly there's something wrong with the tyre... oh darn, I gonna have to withdraw... feck, feck feck... then it comes to me, borrow the girlfriend's wheel. I ride Campag, she rides Shimano, I ride ten speed, she rides 9 speed... Christ this will never work, oh what the hell, just throw it on and don't even think about changing gears

Made the start with seconds to spare.

For those of you who know Richmond Park - getting around in the same gear was never going to happen!

OK here's the miracle part. I could shift up, and down with not a hint of chatter. No problems whatsover in fact. Except the bloody slow wheel/tyre combo GF insists on keeping on her charriot.

Got around in 30:28 on a windy day... not brilliant, but so much better than not starting

It's 'cos on a Campag 10 speed the pitch on the cassette is 4.15mm and on Shimano 9 speed it's 4.35mm - there's only 0.2mm of difference. On a new and clean transmission you'll easily get away with this especially in the indexing is adjusted on the centre of the cassette (it'll then only be 0.8mm out at either end of the cassette and the float in the top jockey wheel can cope with this). Some people rely on this all the time but what it's like when you get wear, mis-adjustment and dirt in the system isn't guaranteed.

She may never speak to her again. I assume you left her with a flat tyre and her back wheel off!

I might have done

It's all good, she was cosseted in the finish area, as she'd already done her run by then, with a jumper, a doughnut and energy shake to hand, so she still talking to me. After the TT I fitted her wheel back and walked the mile to the car while she rode  .
