This could be the answer to my short term injury problem:

I am sitting in the house climbing the walls with a cracked rib after a recent off. It's taking forever to heal, still no better after 10 days! No way am I venturing out on the bike until I feel that I am fully recovered, as the roads are in such a state around here that it would be foolhardy to say the least. Vibrations from potholes and generally crap surfaces don't mix well with a rib injury as previous experience has taught me! I would hope to get usage out of it during the frequent bad weather we suffer in this part of the world.

I was thinking about getting a turbo trainer anyway; this episode has just made me think about getting it sooner rather than later. I like the looks of the above turbo trainer and the reviews on Evans site are good. As a bonus, it works by friction on the wheel rim rather than the tyre which can only be a good thing? Should be able to get it on their price promise guarantee for £170 rather than the £188 they want for it, as a couple of places are selling it at the lower price.

Anyone got one and what do you think of it?

I'm not so sure wearing your rim out is better than wearing your tyres out (I know which I'd prefer). Think of it this way - after a few hard turbo sessions, you look at your tyre and think, 'hmmm, loking a bit worn I'll get a new one.' On the other hand rim wear might not be quite so readily visible but you're likely to find out how worn the next time you try to brake when you're flinging the bike down a descent. My guess it won't be pretty either.

How about something like this Elite Elastogel (don't forget to get a riser block too)

Given the difference in price to what you're originally looking at you could add a cheap wheel and training tyre into the basket to be sure that the wheel and tyre you ride on the road won't get battered in the turbo trainer.
