Minor gear indexing problem(which I've made worse!)

Hi, I'm fairly new to the maintenance side of things. I've had a road bike for a few months, and ridden approx 750 miles on it so far. I recently noticed a slight 'chattering' sound from the rear mech, leading me to think that the indexing may need adjusting.

I attempted to do this, via the gear cable adjuster on the derailleur. However, I've contrived to make the indexing far worse, and now also can't get the chain to jump up anywhere past the third sprocket. There is also now an audible chain rub coming from the front mech too.

I have Tiagra 9 speed, with a triple on the front. Can anyone advise me where I've gone wrong, and what I need to do to put it right?

Cheers.

Sounds like you've played with the screws as well as the cable adjuster to have had that much effect.

Check out some YouTube videos and a basic maintenance book - I quite like the Haynes manual as a general guide but others are available.

The chatter you may have got initially may have been due to lubrication. As Norm says YouTube is your friend. You need to set the limit screws correctly and make sure your cables are not over or under tensioned. Watch a couple of tutorials and that should help. Also don't forget with a triple you have a trim function while on the middle ring.
