Depends what hubs you have and what condition they are in - there is no single answer. I have a pair of mid-90s shimano 600 hubs which have never been serviced - still running great...

My LBS said i should re grease every 400 miles, a bit excessive i thought. i just re greased my hubs the front had done 1200 since the last time and the rear had done 700 miles. The front is an old 105 from the early 90s the rear is only 2 months old and is a tiagra. The front was needing done but the grease in the rear was like new.

I did my rear Shimano hub at about 1000 miles and due to some rainy riding the bearings were a little rusty, the grease was brown and all in all, I'm glad I did it. There was a minor lateral wobble in the wheel, but stripping, cleaning, re-greasing & reassembling sorted that out nicely. I have got some new bearings to fit when I next do the job.

That would be more frequently than once a month for me!

I would recommend at least a couple of times a year if its a daily bike, and even then that depends upon the quality of the bearing seals.

My commuter uses cartridge bearings, so it's a case of renewing the cartridges every 18 months, simple and not costly.

My lower end Shimano hubs I used to grease every 6 months.

I love my old Dura Ace hubs, as they have grease injection ports on the bearing shields, so you just squirt the grease in, out comes the old.
