I've been given a full size keyboard with a USB midi output.

I'd like to connect it to my windows pooter and use the keyboard as a sampler and/or to control sounds played through the computer.

Can any of you musically inclined folk recommend some freeware to at least get me started.

Muchos grassyarse.

I've only used guitar before, and I had a Focusrite starlett that was my audio interface, so I'm guessing you'll need that for the keyboard too? The software I used was free but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called! It had a pop-up where you could click the "still evaluating" button every time you used it, thus having it free forever.

There are at least 10 that are free, or have free trial periods. To some extent, none are better than another, but it's all down to what you're used to. I tried a few but gave up because I have zero patience

I have a Behringer interface I use for bass, guitar and eleftric mando, but wouldn't the keyboard talk to the computer via USB?

Oh probably yes, forgot you said it has midi out. I would YT some "best free DAWs" reviews and see which one looks the most basic, or most suits your needs. I know very little about Midi. I'm also extremely impatient and still prefer working with digital multi trackers! But I just had to fiddle around, Google, find YT vids that explain it etc. If I can't get it to work then I try another DAW. If only I could remember the name of the one I used 5 years ago. Maybe it has been superseded or renamed
