I've been thinking of upgrading my Xero Element XSR3 wheelset (which weighs in at 2040g) to something a little better.

The 2011 Shimano RS20, Mavic Askium, Planet X Model B and Fulcrum 7 sets are about my range.

The Shimanos have good reviews, but there's been some spoke problems with the Mavic rears.

Any advice appreciated

Merlin have Fulcrum 5's for £150 and RS30's for the same price.

My Askiums (2008 I think) have been bomb proof. I've not had a problem but availability of bladed spokes can be a problem. I was on a cycling holiday a few years back (Sardinia) and one of the lads had one break on the first day (Mavic Kysrium's); he borrowed wheel untill he got a replacement spoke; two weeks later he still had the borrowed wheel, there was no bladed spokes on the whole of the island.

That's why I like the Campag(fulcrum) wheels - they sell a useful little repair kit like this one.

Will take a look at the Planet X hoops as they're just down the road from where I live.

Need some tyres and tubes too. May get a deal on both.
