Two extremely different things he's been in: Samuel Beckett's "Eh Joe" where he doesn't say anything, just suffers while being addressed by a woman's voice.
And Private Godfrey in the Dad's Army film. It wasn't a great film but I had to see it just to see him playing Godfrey.

He was terrific as the boss gangster in Layer Cake, and as a rather more uncouth and unpleasant gangster in the Peter Greenaway film Cook, Thief, Wife, Lover. He was more recently in a Doctor Who christmas special as a scrooge like character. Whether the star or a minor character he was always great to watch. I never met the man, but he also came across as a no-nonsense, quirky, but decent chap on chat shows and the like.

In my student days, I had the pleasure of seeing him in The Norman Conquests. He had a real gift for comedy, which often still bubbled just under the surface in his more serious roles.

Yes, one of the rare TV things I found watchable.
I saw him on stage in one of Beckett's plays as well.
