Just moved back to the Wirral, but still working in Liverpool CC, so planning on commuting as far as is possible. Does anyone here use the Mersey Ferries for the watery bit between the two, or do most people use Merseyrail?

Hi,

Sorry for the delayed reply. If you havn't found out yourself already, loads of people take bikes on the Ferries. I do myself regularly. It's as cheap as the train and a wonderful way to start and end the working day. Coming your way, you even get a free cu of tea or coffee to drink on the way over in the morning!

The train is also good though, generally plenty of room for bikes (though I commute the other way).

Cheers
Steve

Do they still play the song on every trip?

No, don't worry about the song, they only play that for the tourist cruises, not on the commuter run. Lot of cyclists use ferry (I should but I'm a weekend/fair weather/lightweight cyclist). It's the best way to get to work, period.

I used to love watching them as a kid. They looked like penguins!

You won't believe what they've done to them now. Bloody vandals.

Loved getting the ferry when I worked in Birkenhead.
As a matter of interest, passing the time waiting to ride onto the Woolwich Ferry down here I was sad to hear and then see the Royal Iris rotting away in the Thames.

Terrible seeing the Royal Iris like that. The original Royal Iris got the 'Royal' designation as she was in action during the war; letting her disintegrate isn't perhaps the best way to respect her valiant role and the people who fought on her.

The Royal Iris in the picture is the successor ship (I think) and had a dance floor. The Beatles played on her. Hard to believe no one can restore her and make her into a floating restaurant or something. Or she could be used as a ferry again, there are a lot more tourists at the Pier Head these days. The amount of money fleeced out of motorists going through the Mersey Tunnels every day could easily pay to have her renovated.

Where's that soapbox...

Hear, hear! It looks like there's been a few calls to bring her back. See this recent story from the Echo.

Now that is sad. I went on The Royal Iris one Saturday afternoon in the early 80's with my cousins to a disco.
How on earth did that happen?
