I am due on a coupel of tours this year (July and August) which will be cycling all day each day, so decided I needed to go out int he heat of the day today to get 'acclimatise' to the hot conditions.

Went all suitably prepared, water, hat, sunglasses etc but my biggest problem of the day was the roads were melting in many places. I had a couple of hairy moments mid corner on wet melted tar. Got off my bike and had a look and I was leaving trails behind me like my mountain bike on the mud in winter!!!

Other than that, lots of very strange noises coming from the tyres!!

Be careful out there folks!

Come and train in Scotland - much less risk of melted tar:smile:

Me too. First time I've experienced it. The front wheel slid out on me as I rounded a bend. Kept it upright but had there been a car coming t'other way, I would have hit it.

I got off and had a look and had I not have seen the mark in the tar I wouldn't have believed that I'd slid on it!

There's a country lane (just outside sarf London) that melts a bit every summer - since it was resurfaced. After a ride yesterday lunchtime the down tube and my shins were sprayed with tiny spots of tar. Which thankfully wipes off with a little white spirit.
The annoying thing is that small stones and flint get 'fused' into the tyres and are much more difficult to remove.

Hot tarmac from the Sun is quite an experience as you take it for granted as its not normally 'soft'.

All the more experience !

Perhaps I should appreciate the fact that the council round here are skinflints and use stone chippings on most of the roads I use. They've just resurfaced with the chuffin things and the first couple of days it was a nightmare on the bike with chippings and dust flying everywhere!
