A while back, someone posted how to make that special Ikea gravy for Swedish meatballs, only I forgot to write it down. If you read this, can you remind me? I think it had cornflour in, and I remembered to buy some today.

Pending a better reply, my recipe for Really Easy Gravy (the quality of which depends entirely on that of the stock cube used):

Make up stock (I use a brand called Telma that a friend put me onto: really excellent, also kosher as it happens. I'm told Marigold is also v good, Maggi & Knorr pretty good, OXO best avoided)
Big lump of butter in small saucepan, melt
Add flour (or cornflour, since you just bought some), mix in and bubble gently for a minute or so
Stir in stock, adding more as it thickens till it's the thickness you like
Simmer gently for two or three minutes

(in other words, it's just like making a white sauce, but with stock instead of milk)

That's it.

Fry meatballs in pan to colour (perhaps with a shallot)
Add Knorr beef stock from cube.
Simmer until meatballs are hot and stock reduced.
Add double cream.
Thicken with a little cornflour if prefered.

Ah, thanks everyone. I think it was Velvet Curtain's recipe I remember. I forgot it includes cream, I'll have to get a pot.

Failing lingonberry, I'm thinking cranberry sauce would work too?

Sainsburys have meatballs on half price just now and I'm wondering whether to stock up even more, but I've got limited freezer space, and some cooked chicken to freeze too....

BTW, the Sainsburys ones (they are a swedish brand, not own brand) suggest they can be served on pasta, as a sort of shish kebab or, assuming the little symbol of a hand means what I think, as a savoury snack. That would be lethal to me, I'd just eat the whole pack in one go!

Glad to be of service.

Ikea do serve them with pasta, I've never tried it though. At home I always do new potatoes, then I can mash them into the gravy on the plate. Yum!

I have done the meatballs cold, sliced in a sandwich with a thick tomato relish - Italian style.

Arch so what time do you want us all round for dinner then

Blimey, the entire forum, in my flat, there wouldn't be room to breathe....

Cheers Velvet. I remember Ikea used to do them with rice, which I loved, but it sort of has to be that special sort of easy cook rice they use, not the normal long grain I have. I may do potatoes. I don't do deep frying*, so if I want chips perhaps I could treat myself to some oven chips

*it's not a health thing, it's a fear thing!

Anyway, tonight is tuna and veg in a cheese sauce, on spaghetti. I might do the meatballs tomorrow.
